Gout
Gout Definition/Overview:
Gout is an extremely painful condition which usually effects the joints of the lower extremities of the body, although gout can also be found in the thumb, elbow, wrist, and even earlobes. Gout afflicts both men and women, although men are as much as ten times more likely to suffer from gout.
Gout Causes:
Gout is caused by either an overproduction of uric acid or the diminished ability to eliminate it, or a combination of both. When uric acid levels become too high, gout occurs as uric acid crystallizes and accumulates in the joints. Once referred to as a rich man’s disease, gout is usually associated with rich, heavy diets and overindulgence in alcohol. Recent studies have also linked gout with insulin resistance.
Gout Symptoms:
The symptoms of gout are most often found in the joint at the base of the big toe, but gout may also occur in the ankles, knees, thumbs, elbows, and/or wrist. Gout symptoms include extreme pain, inflammation and redness, and joints which feel hot and are extremely tender to the touch.
