Vasculitis
Vasculitis Overview:
Vasculitis (angiitis) is a rare disease that involves the inflammation of the vascular system (blood vessels, veins, arteries, and capillaries.) The inflammation can be so severe that the blood vessel walls become tight, weak, and scarred to the point that organs do not receive the proper amount of blood and oxygen. The result is organ and tissue damage that can lead to death. There are many different kinds of vasculitis and it can all people and all ages.
Vasculitis Causes:
The direct cause of vasculitis is not known. It is believed to be associated with immune system abnormalities. Vasculitis often accompanies infections, cancers, medications, chemicals, and rheumatic diseases. One’s body is a delicate balancing system. When the blood vessels become inflamed, they cause the layers of the blood vessel walls to thicken. This then restricts blood flow to organs and tissues causing significant health issues. In some cases, clots or aneurisms are formed.
Vasculitis Symptoms:
Each specific type of vasculitis has its own distinct symptoms depending on which blood vessels and organs are affected. Common symptoms include: weight loss, fatigue, loss of appetite, fever, and muscle and joint pain. Many types of vasculitis involve ulcers, and pain in the affected area.
