Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome Overview:
Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrom (AIDS) is a combination of infections which are the result of damage to the immune system.  Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the agent which attacks the immune system, leaving it vulnerable to infections and tumors, leading to AIDS. There is no known cure for HIV or AIDS but there are options to slow it down.
Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome Causes:
AIDS is the result of HIV attacking the immune system.  HIV is contracted through direct contact of a mucous membrane with bodily fluids of an infected individual.  HIV infects the immune system, destroying the CD4+ cells which are vital for the immune system to function properly.  Once fewer than 200 of these cells exist for every microleter of blood,  immunity is lost and AIDS is contracted.
Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome Symptoms:
The symptoms of AIDS are somewhat hard to detect without medical analysis.  The best indication is when a healthy individual is struck with bacterial, viral or parasitic infections.  These are the types of infections the immune system usually protects against.  Opportunistic infections are also very common for an individual with AIDS, along with fevers, swollen glands and weight loss.
